Review for Mystic Spirit Tarot Playbook

HEADLINE: Kooch Daniels could no more write a bad Tarot book than Rumi would have been capable of writing a bad line of prose.

Tarot is not like most disciplines. It’s not something one can study from a couple of books or through the little white instruction manuals that are packed with every deck. There needs to be a personality involved — a teacher and student relationship akin to what you would find in a martial art. A gentle-but-firm voice to prod you along and, when the teacher can teach no more, help you awaken to your path — one where you will carry on your teacher’s lineage and contribute what you have discovered along the way.

Part of this process requires keeping a journal or notebook. Such practices are a cornerstone of the Western Mystery Traditions, of which Tarot plays a significant role. This record-keeping system is designed to serve as a “logbook” for your Tarot journey, as well as a way of incorporating the teacher’s lessons into practice — thus forming a unique interpretation of the cards and how they relate to each other.

So how does a teacher make this happen by distance and, in most cases, without knowing the student personally? Well, Kooch Daniels has found a way.

Kooch’s latest creation, Mystic Spirit Tarot Playbook, is a well-illustrated how-to guide and magickal record for Tarot readers of all levels of experience. By following through the text and illustrations, as well as note-taking on the feelings and impressions of the cards, the student can formulate a starting point far more focused and personal than what they would get from just reading one of the countless books on Tarot interpretations. Kooch is then able to help the reader — her student — reach into their soul for answers to be found in the cards. Indeed an ingenious system she has devised.

The book is appropriately published in hardcover. Highly recommended — a must-have for any serious Tarot initiate.

Tarot for Teens

written by Kooch and Victor Daniels
authors of Tarot At A Crossroads

When the everyday world seems to lack answers, the Tarot can offer an alternative “reality”—especially for teens. More and more teens are using the Tarot to create a magical reality like Harry Potter’s world, or another that fits their own interests and explores questions that daily school life doesn’t seem to answer or even address.  Sometimes their excitement for Tarot can inspire soul wonder. But if they draw dark cards, they can leave a reader’s table with distrust or anxiety that lasts for a long time.
In a world of perfect readers, there would be no need to address the importance of using tarot cards with impressionable teens in a psychologically sound manner.  But not all readers realize how heavily their words and interpretations can affect vulnerable young people who are newly searching for their paths. When you meet a teen who has been told by a reader that “he will never find love”, or that “the cards indicate that she isn’t capable of reaching a goal,” knowing how to reframe such messages as a way to realize one’s potential becomes urgent.
In some ways many teens are well along to becoming adults, while in other ways they’re still kids whose judgment is not yet well developed. Pressure to know the advantages verses disadvantages in making important choices and to find answers to perplexing questions can be hidden under a teen’s shyness, their distraction by cell phones, or their unwillingness to openly discuss feelings.
But never underestimate a young person’s natural intuition and wisdom, or what he or she might make of your comments. For example, instead of agreeing with your interpretation that the major arcana card “Justice” represents fairly weighing pros and cons, in a teen’s perception it can represent his right to photo bomb a classmate’s selfie.  To make sure you’re both communicating on the same track, be willing to ask relevant questions. Some young people will view you as a knowing authority and will accept your interpretations as a source of deciding truth. Others will view your comments primarily as a source of entertainment, or some as a combination of both.
Although there are innumerable situations, and countless ways to discuss the cards, there are some beneficial methods for working that can inspire positive directions and self-discovery.  When possible, encourage a back-and-forth dialogue to gain clues and insight into a teen’s inner world. This may include what has actually gone on in the past, what is felt in the present, and concerns about the future that are triggered by the turned up cards.  This exploration opens up an opportunity to let out feelings that may be tightly kept inside.
You can let teens talk about what they see in the images and speak in relation to whatever is most critical to them now.  You can let them have a turn at guiding the discussion to get a good sense of how they want to run with or from the messages they and you find in the card symbols. Keep in mind that many teens feel overwhelmed by the complex questions and dilemmas they face. What internal demons or emotional pressures may they be facing? A golden nugget might be uncovered when you open up a chance to make decisions that can lead in a helpful direction.
Whatever process you use during your reading session, don’t forget the magic and mystery that the cards can inspire.  Without fail, it bodes well if your cards leave your client believing he or she can reach for the stars and find their way out of any mineshaft of confusion or fear.

Meeting of Tarot and Psychology

by Kooch and Victor Daniels

THIS UNPARALLELED RESOURCE CAN BENEFIT TAROT READERS, PSYCHOTHERAPISTS, COUNSELORS,  ART THERAPISTS, LIFE COACHES, SOCIAL WORKERS AND YOU

IF YOU’RE A TAROT READER, you’ll find insights and understandings that are in no other work on the Tarot. The book addresses the relationship between reader and client. It shows how to uncover thoughts, feelings, and sensations that underlie first reactions to a card, and it offers a number of unique new spreads that can add additional dimensions and depth to your readings.

IF YOU’RE A COUNSELOR, our discussions of visual imagery will take you to new understandings for working with clients. Much of our thinking occurs as mental pictures and mind-movies. This book details how to use a collection of visual images as a substitute for psychodramatic enactment, empty chair dialogues, sand trays, or artistic media...and so much more!

This wonderful book integrates traditional tarot interpretations with psychological insights to create meaningful interpretations and useful directions for your work whether you do readings for yourself, for friends, or professionally — or if you simply want to explore the value of using a symbolic language

            Review of the Voyager Tarot
By Kooch Daniels

When someone gave me the James Wanless Voyager Tarot, as a birthday gift, I was happily surprised to receive a modern, truly unique deck filled with vibrant collage images.  Initially, I had no idea that James had harnessed the spirit of the tarot to inspire oracular visions that would come to light on my divination table.
Not only did his multicultural cards that are crafted for “Fortune Creation” instead of “Fortune Telling” have a positive effect on me, but they also visibly inspired the many people who sat across from me at my reading table who looked at their colorful images.   Because of their upbeat quality, his deck, like the Delphi flame, could inspire people to easily open up and share emotions.  Shortly after I began doing readings with this original deck, and noticing that it deeply affected people, I became addicted to using it.  Even after more than two decades of using it to give readings, it is still one of my most trusted decks to most assuredly invoke a positive response from the uninitiated viewer.
These cards follow the structure of the long-established tarot format, but some new ideas are presented, especially in relation to the minor arcana suit that represents the element air.  Obviously James must feel a personal connection with the magic of crystals, as he has used crystals to represent the lesser trump that is traditionally symbolized by the swords. Most people love crystals, know something about their healing properties and feel hopeful when they are looking at them.  During readings, when someone views the crystals, an affirming response is often summoned in response to questions being asked.  It’s not that I’m lazy, but while working, I don’t miss needing to discuss why a sword has many meanings and that they don’t have to be viewed as a weapon or in a severing manner.
The Voyager Tarot makes it easy to understand why James Wanless is considered a leader in the tarot community, and “a visionary, educator, artist, new thought leader”.    If you love playing with the cards and your intention is to see behind the veil, don’t miss the benefit of working with these magical cards.

Sorry....but my life has been so busy that I haven't been posting here recently.  I won't cry on your shoulder as I know your life is busy too, but I will tell you that most of my time has been focused on meeting two separate publishing deadlines for turning in two manuscripts.  One highlights the tarot in relation to psychology and the other is an illustrated discussion of the chakras.  Both texts are a culmination of my life's passion and studies.  The writing of these books has taken more than the last several years.  After turning in a manuscript, it takes a publishing house about a year to turn it into a book....so we'll all have to wait a bit longer to hear more about these upcoming unique treasures.

For now, I want to wish you happiness in the new year.  Today, the Sun has entered Aquarius @ 7:28 PAC time. Happy Dawning of the New Age & happy birthday to all Aquarians.

Drinking From The Cup Of Love

By Kooch Daniels

A tarot student once asked, “What does it mean if the majority of the cards in my tarot spread are from the suit of cups?”
“It’s important to drink from the cup of love,” was my reply.
A different answer to this question involved exploring the meaning of the specific cards in the layout.  However, this question could also be answered by examining the significance of the meaning of the suit of cups. What is this tarot suit communicating to us?
The suit of cups most often involves love, passion, and relationships. It is identified with the element water, the emotions, depth of feelings, receptivity, imagination, and the intuition.  When there is a predominance of the suit of cups in a tarot spread, its message involves a watery or emotional essence.  It visually shows the importance of discussing the querant’s emotional needs and puts heart-felt desires in the limelight.  Even if the topic of romance isn’t the main question being asked, the person receiving the reading may need to get more in touch with their feelings and the truth of what’s affecting their inner reality.
A majority of the suit of cups in a spread can indicate that life experiences are triggering emotional reactions. If the cards are mostly upright with positive images, I might ask the querant if he or she is falling in love or seeking advice about an on-going relationship.  When most of the cup cards in the spread are reversed, I may ask whether a relationship is in conflict or if there is tension invoked by a past relationship.  Is the person who is getting the reading suffering from the pain of loss or quarrelling with a significant other?
During the discussion of the potential meaning of these cards, it will become obvious if the person is anxious or secure, a victim or victor in love, and how I can best nourish my querant’s sense of emotional well-being. While using the spread to explore the path of the inner self, it may become possible to dive into the sea of the subconscious mind and find truths buried under the surface of conscious awareness.  My key to unlocking the message of this suit is inwardly questioning, “What are you presently drinking from the cup of love?”
